West Bay Opera Sunlight Series, 1997-98

Salon Viardot

Sunday, November 23, 1997, 7:00 PM

West Bay Opera is pleased to announce the first of the three Sunlight Series concerts of the 1997-98 season: Salon Viardot, a brilliant one-woman show featuring Marta Johansen as the famed diva and composer Pauline Viardot-Garcia. The production, written by Georgia Smith, with Robert Schwartz at the piano and costumes by Richard Battle, is sure to dazzle.

Throughout 19th century Europe, "Viardot" was a household word. Her intimate circle embraced Chopin, Liszt, Rossini, Dickens, Gounod, Corot, and Delacroix: in short, everyone who was anyone in Paris and London. In Russia, Viardot, was mobbed by an adoring public, yet later reviled as the temptress for whom the great novelist Ivan Turgenev abandoned his country.

The performance will take place at Grace Lutheran Church, 3149 Waverley Street, Palo Alto. Tickets are $15. Sunlight Series subscriptions are also available from the box office for $50. For additional information, please call or visit the West Bay Opera box office, located at 221 Lambert Street, Palo Alto, near El Camino Real and Page Mill Road; telephone (650) 424-9999. Box office hours are Monday-Friday, 1-6 PM.
