Richard W. Battle

Line

Richard W. Battle is the costume designer for Cavalleria rusticana and Pagliacci. His previous West Bay Opera productions include The Merry Widow, Macbeth, The Rake’s Progress, The Threepenny Opera, Don Giovanni, Viva la mamma, La Périchole, Tartuffe (set and costume design), Così fan tutte, The Consul, Tosca, Rigoletto, Lucia di Lammermoor, La traviata, and Die Fledermaus. He has been on the faculty of the Mills College Drama Department since 1972.

Mr. Battle has designed costumes and scenery for Leonide Massine at Sadler’s Wells, Michael Smuin at San Francisco Ballet, John Copley at San Francisco’s Merola Opera program, Ron Guidi at Oakland Ballet, Woodminster Musical Theater, Oakland Ensemble, A.C.T., and Lorraine Hansbery Theater of San Francisco. He has been nominated for Emmy Awards for makeup design in San Francisco Ballet’s televised productions of Songs for Dead Warriors, Cinderella, and The Tempest, and for scenic design in The Lamplighters’ production of H.M.S. Pinafore. He has won the Bay Area Critics Award for Sophisticated Ladies, Pirates of Penzance, Pecong, and Savoyards. He is the makeup artist for Kathleen Battle, Gabrielle Schnaut, Rodney Gilfry, James Morris, Dolora Zajick, and other leading vocal and performing artists. Mr. Battle is a past representative for Local 706 International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees.
