James Richard Frieman

Line

James Richard Frieman is the assistant conductor and chorus master for Carmen. Previous productions with West Bay Opera include Der fliegende Holländer, The Queen of Spades, Manon Lescaut, and Lucia di Lammermoor. He received his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in conducting from Stanford University, and is a graduate of Temple University’s Boyer College of Music and San Francisco State University.

From 1999 through 2002, Dr. Frieman was music director of the San Diego Master Chorale, which was featured with the San Diego Symphony, San Diego Chamber Orchestra, and San Diego Opera. In 1999–2000, he was assistant conductor of the Huntsville Festival Orchestra in Ontario, the resident ensemble of one of Canada’s premier summer arts festivals. From 1980 to 1991, he served as Music Director of the San Francisco Concert Chorale, which was featured in concert with such organizations as the Kronos Quartet, Fremont Symphony, Margaret Jenkins Dance Company, and Bay Area Women’s Philharmonic.

Dr. Frieman has also been music director for the Lyric Theater of San José and the Stanford Savoyards, and from 1979–1983 was Director of Choral Activities at Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park. He lives in Palo Alto.
