Ravil Atlas

Bay Area native Ravil Atlas returns to West Bay Opera in this production of Il Trovatore. He has appeared regularly with Opera San José, appearing in the roles of Rodolfo, Edgardo in Lucia, Gustavo in Un Ballo in Maschera, Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi, and Alfred in Die Fledermaus. Other engagement have included Manrico with Walnut Creek's Festival Opera, Tamino with Pacific Repertory Opera, Alfredo and Don José with Tacoma Opera, Luigi in Il Tabarro with Oakland Lyric Opera, the title role in The Tales of Hoffmann and Almaviva in The Barber of Seville (his debut as a leading tenor) with West Bay Opera, Gonzalo in L'Heure Espagnole with Mendocino Music Festival, and Ferrando in Così fan tutte with Peninsula Opera. Last season he made his debut in Guatemala as Alfredo in La Traviata, the first staging of an opera in that country in almost 70 years.

On the concert stage he has sung with Kent Nagano and the Berkeley Symphony in the title roles of Busoni's Doktor Faust and Stravinsky's Oedipus Rex, the Verdi Requiem with the Santa Clara Chorale and San Jose Symphonic Chorus, and Handel's Messiah with the Redwood Symphony. He was featured soloist in Dave Brubeck's To Hope: A Mass at St. Joseph's Cathedral, accompanied by the composer. He has also sung with the Sacramento Ballet (Carmina Burana) and the Mendocino Music Festival (Das Lied von der Erde).

Equally at home on the musical theater stage, Mr. Atlas has appeared in the national companies of two of San Francisco's record-breaking musicals: as Jean Valjean / Brujon in Le Miserables, and as opera star Ubaldo Piangi in The Phantom of the Opera. Other musical theater appearances include Pacific Overtures at San Jose Civic Light Opera, the title roles of Candide with the Arts Alliance Festival and The Student Prince with Woodminster Amphitheatre, and the role of the Padre (played to critical acclaim) in Man of La Mancha with the nationally recognized PaperMill Playhouse.

Mr. Atlas earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in vocal performance from San Jose State University. He was the winner of the San Jose Opera Guild competition and was a regional finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council auditions and the San Francisco Opera Center auditions. Mr. Atlas began his professional singing career as a member of the world-renowned vocal ensemble Chanticleer.
