Bass-baritone James Brown was most recently seen at West Bay Opera as the Bonze in Madama Butterfly.l. He made his company debut in 1998 as Haly in The Italian Girl in Algiers, and followed that with Moralès in Carmen and the Secret Police Agent in The Consul. He began his operatic career with the Opera Theater Workshop at California State University, Sacramento, where he performed the roles of Dr. Bartolo in Le Nozze di Figaro, Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte, and Kecal in The Bartered Bride. He sang Don Alfonso in Così fan tutte, Figaro in Le Nozze di Figaro, and Leporello in Don Giovanni with the Mosswood Spring Opera in Davis. He has also performed with Bay City Opera in Aptos, Village Opera in Sacramento, Opera San José, Bear Valley Music Festival and Mission Opera in Fremont in roles including le Comte des Grieux in Manon, Leporello, and the title role in Don Pasquale. He will be singing the role of Masetto this summer in the Bear Valley Music Festival's production of Don Giovanni. He currently studies voice with Gregory Stapp in San Francisco and coaches with Irina Prilipko in San Jose.
