Rick DoughertyRick already had twenty years of performance experience when he returned to Sonoma State University to complete his degree. He received a vocal scholarship to study under Carol Lewis and became an assistant director in the opera program under Peggy Donovan-Jeffries. He also continued to write arrangements and perform with the jazz ensembles. In 1986 he received the Award for Outstanding Solo Performance from the National Association of Jazz Educators (NAJE). at the Berkeley Collegiate Jazz Festival.
Rick graduated with honors and distinction in 1986 and began directing opera. In the past seven years, he has directed 23 operas in the Bay area. In 1991 he became stage director for the Music From Bear Valley Summer Music Festival.
In addition to his interest in opera, Rick has continued to pursue his love of vocal music and arranging. In 1986 he helped form the vocal trio Café Society, to perform swing music from the 30's and 40's, and in 1993 joined the a capella jazz quintet Syncopation. He has conducted vocal workshops for the San Francisco, Sonoma County and Los Angeles Folk Music Societies, and has written arrangements for the Washington State University Vocal Jazz Ensemble.
Rick may also be recognized as the tenor with the well known folk group, The Limeliters, who tour throughout the United States presenting their unique style of folk music.
