Christopher HarlanHe conceived, designed, and directed the world premieres of A Muskrat Lullaby by Edward Barnes and Monticello by Glenn Paxton, both in Los Angeles; new productions of Die Zauberflöte, Faust, and Il barbiere di Siviglia; and for the San Luis Obispo Mozart Festival, new productions of Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Così fan tutte, Le nozze di Figaro, and Die Zauberflöte. His directing credits also include revivals of Tosca with Maria Ewing and Carol Vaness; Madama Butterfly with Galina Gorchakova, Catherine Malfitano, and and Yoko Watanabe; Otello with Plácido Domingo and June Anderson; Salome with Hildegard Behrens; Faust with Marcello Giordani and Samuel Ramey; and La bohème, all for Los Angeles Opera; La Cenerentola in Auckland, New Zealand, Der fliegende Holländer for Houston Grand Opera, L'elisir d'amore in Madrid, and most recently, Salome at the Savonlinna Festival in Finland. He has worked as Associate/Assistant Director in Melbourne, Seville, Barcelona, Seattle, Berlin, Charlotte, Dallas, Houston, San Diego, Washington, D.C., and Long Beach, as well as for the Los Angeles Opera Theater and the Lyric Opera of Chicago. He spent four consecutive summers working as stage assistant at the Wagner Festival in Bayreuth, where he worked on both the Patrice Chéreau and Peter Hall Ring cycles. He continually works with young singers in master classes and at universities, and has also written regularly for the Opera Quarterly. Future engagements include directing revivals of Salome in Pittsburgh, L'elisir d'amore in Graz, Rigoletto in San Diego, and a new production of Don Giovanni for the Mozart Festival in San Luis Obispo.
