Ernest Fredric Knell
Ernest Fredric Knell is the conductor for The Queen of Spades. Previous appearances with West Bay Opera include Carmen, Il trovatore, Rigoletto, and La traviata. As a member of the musical staff of San Francisco Opera since 1976, Maestro Knell has participated in more than 450 productions as coach, accompanist, and Musical Assistant to the General Director. At present, he holds the position of Associate Chorus Master, where, in the Russian repertory, he has worked with conductors Valery Gergiev, Yuri Temirkanov, and Alexander Anisimov in the preparation of Eugene Onegin, Ruslan and Lyudmila, War and Peace, Betrothal in a Monastery, Prince Igor, and Khovanshchina, as well as several productions of Pikovaya Dama. Maestro Knell has conducted Hansel and Gretel, Verdi’s Otello and Rutland Boughton’s The Immortal Hour at Berkeley Opera, and La bohème, Don Giovanni, The Consul, and La Cenerentola at Pacific Repertory Opera of San Luis Obispo. As Minister of Music at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Oakland for the past 20 years, he manages a diverse music program for all ages. He has also been the musical director of the Berkeley Bach Cantata Group since 1988.
