Douglas Nagel

Line

Bad BoyDouglas Nagel is the director for Così fan tutte. The bass-baritone made his California debut with West Bay Opera as Horace Tabor (The Ballad of Baby Doe), where he has also sung the title roles in Eugene Onegin and Don Pasquale, and Enrico (Lucia di Lammermoor), Count Almaviva (The Marriage of Figaro), Marcello (La bohème), and Trulove (The Rake’s Progress).

A Montana native, Mr. Nagel has sung with Opera San José, most recently as Thomas Putman (Ward, The Crucible), Virginia Opera, Opera Idaho, Santa Barbara Grand Opera, Eugene Opera, Arizona Opera, Greater Buffalo Opera Company, and Bear Valley Music Festival. His repertoire includes Scarpia, Don Giovanni, Don Pasquale, Germont, the Dutchman, Don Magnifico, Dr. Bartolo, Sharpless, Onegin, and Wotan. His Count Orlock (Dracula) in the world premiere of Henderson’s Nosferatu at the Rimrock Opera was recently released on CD.

Mr. Nagel recently directed Pirates of Penzance at Longview Opera, TX, and Die Fledermaus at Sacramento Opera. In addition, he adapts full-length operas for touring in schools, including The Tales of Hoffmann, Die Fledermaus, Trouble in Tahiti, Hansel and Gretel, The Impresario, and The Magic Flute. He has joined the Opera San José staff as Education Consultant, and will continue as Artistic Director at the Rimrock Opera.
