Douglas Nagel

Bad BoyDouglas Nagel makes his West Bay Opera directing debut in Così fan tutte. As a singer, he made his California debut with WBO as Horace Tabor (The Ballad of Baby Doe), and has also sung the title roles in Eugene Onegin and Don Pasquale, and Enrico (Lucia di Lammermoor), Count Almaviva (The Marriage of Figaro), Marcello (La bohème), and Trulove (The Rake’s Progress).

A Montana native, Mr. Nagel is General Director of Rimrock Opera in Billings, where he has staged 13 productions. He began directing at 21, and has produced, directed, and often conducted Die Fledermaus, The Tales of Hoffmann, Gigi, Pajama Game, Pirates of Penzance, Il tabarro, Gianni Schicchi, A Hand of Bridge, Egisto, Riders to the Sea, The Magic Flute, The Scarf, The Telephone, The Impresario and L’Ormindo, and has produced and/or directed Madama Butterfly, Tosca, The Girl of the Golden West, Don Pasquale, Carmen, The Merry Widow, La bohème, Hansel and Gretel, and La traviata. In addition, he adapts full-length operas into shorter versions for school presentation, including The Tales of Hoffmann, Die Fledermaus, Trouble in Tahiti, Hansel and Gretel, La bohème, The Impresario, and The Magic Flute.

Mr. Nagle received his BM from the University of Wyoming and MM from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and has taught at California State University, Hayward and Southern Oregon University in Ashland.
