The Rome Chief of Police, the ruthless Baron Scarpia, has set his sights on beautiful Floria Tosca, the opera singer who is in love with Mario Cavaradossi, the painter. When Mario helps Angelotti, a political prisoner on the run, Scarpia finds the perfect opportunity to separate the lovers. He has Mario tortured to get him to reveal Angelotti's whereabouts. Eventually, Tosca offers herself up to save him, on condition that Scarpia let her flee Rome with Mario afterwards. He agrees but says he must arrange a mock execution for Mario, so that people will not suspect, and then signs a permit for the two to pass through the city gates. When Scarpia approaches her to collect his prize, she stabs him in the chest with a knife. She rushes to the roof of the Castel Sant'Angelo prison where she explains to Mario what's happened and watches his execution, After the guards leave she realizes, to her horror, that Scarpia had double-crossed her. Mario is dead. Moments later, Scarpia's aides chase after her, having found out that she had murdered the Chief.  Promising Scarpia to meet him before God, she rushes to the parapet and jumps to her death.
