La traviata Cast Bios

Shaina Martinez, soprano, makes her company debut with West Bay Opera singing the role of Violetta in La traviata. Ms. Martinez has sung the role of Violetta with MassOpera and Lighthouse Opera Company, the latter with whom she has sung Susannah (Susannah) and Donna Elvira (Don Giovanni). As a studio artist at Florida Grand Opera, she sang the roles of Cio Cio San and Kate Pinkerton (Madama Butterfly), and covered Donna Anna (Don Giovanni). With Opera Maine, she sung the role of Giannetta and covered Adina (L’Elisir d’Amore). At Manhattan School of Music, she performed the roles of Fiordiligi (Cosi fan tutte) and Saffi (Der Zigeunerbaron). Other roles include Salud (La vida breve) with The In Series, the title role of Viardot’s Cendrillon with City Lyric Opera, and Marie/cover (La fille du Regiment) with Martina Arroyo’s Prelude to Performance. A 2021 Metropolitan Opera National Council semifinalist, Ms. Martinez has received awards from the National Federation of Music Clubs, Washington International Competition, Loren L. Zachary Society, Opera at Florham, Vero Beach Opera, and SAS Performing Arts Competition. 

Alonso Sicarios León, tenor, returns to West Bay Opera to sing Alfredo in La traviata. He made his WBO debut singing Rinuccio (Gianni Schicchi). He has also been heard at WBO as Luigi (Il tabarro) and Narraboth (Salomé). Originally from Sinaloa, México, he has sung a number of opera and zarzuela roles, including Nemorino (L'elisir d'amore), Dl n José (Carmen), Leandro (La tabernera del puerto), Tamino (The Magic Flute), Bastian (Bastian et Bastianne), Fenton (Falstaff), Felipe Montero (Mario Lavista's Aura), Mozart (Mozart and Salieri) Il duca di Mantova (Rigoletto), Beppe (Pagliacci), The young collector (A Streetcar Named Desire), and roles in  musical theater including Aladdin (Aladdin), Freddy Eynsford-Hill (My Fair Lady), Erik (The Phantom of the Opera) and Anselmo (Man of La Mancha). He has sung at the Bellas Artes Opera House in Mexico City, as well as the Teatro Francisco Cardoso in Sao Paulo and other venues in Latin America and the US.  He has won a number of prizes and competition awards in Mexico. Most recently he won audience favorite at the Maria Callas Competition in Sao Paulo in 2019 and was finalist in the Medici Competition earlier this year.

Jason Duika, baritone,  sings Giorgio Germont in La traviata .He made his West Bay Opera debut as Marcello in La bohème , in October 2018. He was later featured as Francesco Foscari in the Bay Area premiere of Verdi's I due Foscari by West Bay Opera. He was also heard in the title role in Nabucco. He most recently sang Herode in New Amsterdam Opera's production of Massenet's Herodiade , to critical acclaim. In Spring 2018 he was a finalist in the New York Lyric Opera Competition at Carnegie Hall. He was also a finalist at the James Toland Vocal Competition in 2015. He was the recipient of the Bayview Music Festival Scholarship; the VoicExperience, BelCanto Northwest and Aims Scholarships and the Jacobs School of Music Dean’s Award. Recent engagements include Enrico ( Lucia di Lammermoor ) at Indiana University; Baron Douphol ( La traviata ) at NYC Opera Collaborative; and the Wigmaker (Ariadne auf Naxos) and Dr. Malatesta ( Don Pasquale ) at Palm Beach Opera. He was a member of the young artists program at Palm Beach Opera in 2015 and 2016 where he sang and covered nine roles with the company, including Herman in Ben Moore’s world premiere opera Enemies, A Love Story. He was also a member of the young artist program at Wichita Grand Opera where he understudied the Count ( The Marriage of Figaro ) and Iago ( Otello ). He was a festival artist at Utah Festival Opera, where he sung Ford ( Falstaff ) and understudied Valentine ( Faust ). Other roles performed and understudied include Dancairo and Escamillo ( Carmen ), Harlekin ( Ariadne ), Paquiro ( Goyescas - Granados), Dr. Falke ( Die Fledermaus ) and Germont ( La traviata). An active oratorio performer, he's sung the title role in Handel's Saul , as well as the baritone solos in Carl Orff's Carmina Burana at Alma College, among other engagements. He holds a BA in Music - Voice, from Alma College, an M.M. in Voice Performance from Portland State University and a Performer Diploma in Voice from Indiana Universituy's Jacobs School of Music.

Joshua Hughes,  bass-baritone,  makes his West Bay Opera debut singing Dottore Grenvil in La traviata Adept at a wide variety of repertoire, he has performed locally with Lamplighters Music Theatre as Lord Chancellor (Iolanthe) and Man 1 (A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder), Opera San José as Baby John (West Side Story) and the Wolf (Barab, Little Red Riding Hood), and as soloist with Soli Deo Gloria (Saint John Passion; CPE Bach, Magnificat). Previously based in Dallas, TX, he has appeared with American Baroque Opera Company as Uberto (La serva padrona) and Melisso (Alcina), Orchestra of New Spain as Licomede (Courcelle, Achille in Sciro), Opera in Concert as Der Fischer (Blach, Die Flut), and as a frequent soloist with Dallas Bach Society (The Fairy Queen, Saint Matthew Passion, Saint John Passion). Additional credits include performances with Lyric Opera Baltimore, Young Victorian Theatre Company, Victorian Lyric Opera Company, and Hong Kong Disneyland. He holds degrees from Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins University and Oklahoma City University.

Dan Morris,  bass-baritone, returns to West Bay Opera and the opera stage in the role of the Marchese d’Obigny. Past roles with WBO include  Silvano (Un ballo in maschera), Angelotti (Tosca), Valentin in (Faust) Escamillo (Carmen), Count Almaviva (The Marriage of Figaro), Alfio (Cavalleria Rusticana, Killian and Ottokar in the same production of Der Freischütz and Monterone in Rigoletto, Alidoro in La cenerentola.Other roles Mr. Morris has sung include at Opera San Jose, Marcello  (La bohéme), Balthazar and Melchior (Amahl and the Night Visitors), Damis (Kirk Mechem's Tartuffe), Betto (Giani Schicchi), at Mendocino Music Festival, Jack Rance  (La fanciulla del west); at Bay Shore Lyric Opera, Figaro (Il barbiere di Siviglia), the title role in Rigoletto, Schaunard in La bohéme; and at Martinez Opera, Grenvil in La traviata Mr. Morris holds a Bachelor of Arts in Vocal Performing from San Jose State University and a Master’s in Pastoral Liturgy from Santa Clara University. 

Katja Heuzeroth,  mezzo-soprano, makes her West Bay Opera debut singing the role of Flora in La traviata. Born in Wiesbaden, Germany, Ms. Heuzeroth made her professional debut at the Bayreuther Festival House performing in Richard Wagner’s Parsifal, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, and Der fliegende Holländer. Ms. Heuzeroth has sung with Union Avenue Opera, The Sauerland Herbst Festival, Lucerne Festival, Island City Opera, and Riverbent Opera. Her operatic roles include Thirza (Ethel Smyth, The Wreckers ) Lehrbube ( Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg ), Blumenmädchen ( Parsifal ), Suzy/Lolette ( La rondine ), Mercedez ( Carmen ), Dritte Dame ( Die Zauberflöte ), Komponist ( Ariadne auf Naxos ), Cherubino ( Le nozze de Figaro ), Hänsel ( Hänsel und Gretel ), Flosshilde and Fricka ( Das Rheingold ), Adalgisa ( Norma ), Bradamante ( Alcina ), Meg ( Little Women ) and Kascheyevna in Kashchey the Immortal . She has also been seen in concert singing scenes from Carmen , Samson and Dalilah Contes d'Hoffmann, Joan of Arc, Der Rosenkavalier, Cosi fan tutte ; and Die Walküre . Ms. Heuzeroth was a Young Artist with Dicapo Opera Theatre and a stipend recipient of the Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Richard Wagner Foundation, and MidAmerica Productions.


Morgan Balfour, soprano, makes her West Bay Opera debut singing Annina in La traviata. Ms. Balfour is currently performing Musetta (La Boheme) for San Francisco Opera’s Opera Together tour. For Lyric Opera of Kansas City she covered both Musetta (La bohéme) and Blondchen (Die Entführung aus dem Serail) and was scheduled to appear as Mrs Grady (The Shining). In her native Australia, Ms. Balfour has performed Cephise (Pigmalion) with Pinchgut Opera and Honour (King Arthur) with Brisbane Baroque Festival. As a concert soloist, Ms. Balfour has appeared with Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, Madison Bach Musicians, California Bach Society, American Bach Soloists, Canberra Symphony Orchestra and Sydney Philharmonia. She performed at the 2022 Carmel Bach Festival as a Virginia Best Adams Fellow and will appear with Cantata Collective in the Bay Area for their final concert of the 2022-23 season. Possessing a strong affinity for early music, Ms. Balfour was the 2019 Handel Aria Competition First Prize Winner, 2021 Colorado Bach Ensemble Second Prize Winner and 2021 Kentucky Bach Audrey Rooney Vocal Competition Encouragement Award Winner.




Steven Berlanga, bass-baritone, makes his West Bay Opera debut singing the role of Baron Douphol in La traviata. A native of Salinas, CA, Mr. Berlanga recently sang the role of Figaro (Le nozze di Figaro) with Santa Cruz Opera Project. With New Voices Opera, he sang the roles of The Stranger (Chuaqui, The Forest of Dreams) and Boris (Eoetvoes, The King in Yellow). He has also sung with Cabrillo Stage, IU Opera, and the Opera Institute at CSULB. Mr. Berlanga is finishing his doctorate in Choral Conducting at Indiana University, and has also studied at College-Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati, California State University – Long Beach, and Cabrillo College. As a concert soloist, Mr. Berlanga has sung with the Arizona Philharmonic, Ensemble Monterey, Espressivo Ensemble, and Santa Cruz Symphony. As a choral artist, he has sung with professional chamber choirs throughout the United States such as The Crossing, Santa Fe Desert Chorale, Exigence, Kinnara, and The Thirteen.



Jackson Beaman,  tenor, sings the role of Gastone in La traviata. He has appeared in previous WBO productions of as Chekalinsky (Pikovaya Dama), Malcolm (Macbeth), Morales, Dancairo

(Carmen), First Prisoner (Fidelio), Third Jew (Salomé), Tinca (Il tabarro), and Ruiz (Il trovatore). Other engagements Ralph Rackstraw (H.M.S. Pinafore) with Lamplighters, Nathaniel (Tales of Hoffmann) with Pocket Opera, and Advisor 2 to LBJ (Lady Bird: First Lady of the Land) in a coproduction with Bay Shore Lyric Opera, Mission Chamber Orchestra of SJ, and SJ Symphonic choir. He has also appeared with Pocket Opera as

Rabonier (La rondine) and Tonik (Two Widows), and with Island City Opera, covering the role of Arturo (Lucia di Lammermoor). Mr. Beaman attended U.C. Santa Barbara (UCSB), where he sang the role of Bob (The Old Maid and the Thief). He holds a B.Sc. in Biochemistry from UCSB.


Eric Levintow,  tenor, , makes his West Bay Opera debut singing the role of Giuseppe (and Alfredo understudy) in La traviata. Mr. Levintow sang this season with Pocket Opera as Gastone (La traviata) and Antonio (Wagner's No Love Allowed). Last year he made his debut with Opera San José as First Sailor (Dido and Aeneas) and the San Francisco Opera Guild (understudy) as Tamino (The Magic Flute). As a graduate student with Opera UCLA, he appeared as Jo the Loiterer (The Mother of Us All), The Bishop of Puebla (Carla Lucero's Juana), Judah (Janice Hamer's Lost Childhood), and the tenor soloist in Bernstein's Songfest and Mozart’s Coronation Mass. Past roles include Dorvil (La scala di seta) with Phenix Opera and Léandre (Le médecin malgré lui) with Pocket Opera. He will return to the San Francisco Opera Guild this fall to sing Rodolfo (La

bohème).
